Have you ever thought of adopting? A dog, that is. Then this is a great time to do it as October is the month the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has dubbed Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month.
Even if you're not planning on adopting a dog this month, but you are thinking of it for the future, you should check out their website before you step foot in a shelter or find yourself on Petfinder.com. The ASPCA's site is a veritable cornucopia of important information for those thinking of adopting a shelter dog, such as:
Things to think about before you adopt (and there is much to think about)
How much is that dog going to cost me in the long run? (here's a hint: A lot.)
Top 10 tips for adopting the perfect family pet
And when you're ready they'll even help you find a shelter near you.
When you've gone through all the useful information, thought it out, and found the perfect dog for you don't forget about the schwag. I'm loving the holiday cards.
If you are planning on adopting a dog I urge you to go through all the information the ASPCA has provided for you. Adding a dog to your family is not something to approach lightly, it's an investment of time, money, and love. But it's so worth it when you find the right one. So what are you still doing here? Go. Scram. Shoo. Git.
Thank you! I will return to this page when we are finally ready to get a dog. I'm inclined to adopt from a shelter or rescue organization.

Here here! I think everyone should check their area shelters before buying a dog from a pet shop or breeder.

Goldie is a shelter dog. I was a shelter volunteer, she was there, week after week. I kept thinking "Dang, this is SUCH a good dog - why doesn't someone take her home?"
Best decision I ever made.

This weekend there was a special adopt a dog day at our local shelter and we went. There wasn't a dog there that was the right fit for us but it did totally solidfy our decision to get a dog. I am giddy about this.
I devoured these links you provided full of helpful information for a new pet adopter. We'll keep looking at our shelter (called a Human Society in Canada) and if no luck we have a breed in mind and have made some contact with breeders today actually.
Then I will be stalking you and this site for all the info I'll need to know.
